Tribute to Mr Bill Wheeler

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Mr Wheeler died peacefully on Thursday, 21st November, 2019.

Mr Wheeler was a highly respected member of the OLSJ family. He served as Deputy Head for nearly 20 years, helping to build the foundations of our Catholic school community following the amalgamation of Notre Dame Convent School and St John Rigby RC High School. Mr Wheeler’s passion for history engaged and inspired countless pupils over the years. Whether in lessons or assemblies he captivated his audience with ease. It is with great fondness and affection that former pupils and staff alike remember his stories and local tales. Some even went on to follow in his footsteps as a direct result of his teaching.

Many remember him for his versatility whether being on stage for the school production, his many fund-raising efforts through running and playing badminton or simply eating oranges in his office with the test match on the radio! Undaunted by any challenge Mr Wheeler planted trees, shovelled snow and organised summer fairs with similar aplomb. Over the years he accompanied many school visits, helping to make memories all the way!

To all who met him Mr Wheeler epitomised kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity of time. To staff he was the voice of reason, to pupils a father-figure. Remembered for his genuine care and sense of humour he will always have a special place in our hearts.

May he rest in peace.
