Clubs and Societies
At OLSJ we want all pupils to make the most of their gifts and talents and to pursue a healthy, rounded lifestyle.
To that end we offer a wide variety of opportunities to allow our pupils to widen their interests, meet new people and gain new experiences. Some of these areas are open to the whole school and provide an excellent way for pupils of all ages and interests to learn and contribute together; others are specific to different year groups, making it easier to offer age-appropriate opportunities at a range of ability levels. We firmly believe that extra-curricular activities contribute to the development of the whole child. From starting at OLSJ all staff are encouraged to contribute to extra-curricular activities enabling us to offer a wide range of options to pupils.
Sporting activities include clubs in football, netball, rugby, badminton, cricket, rounders and athletics. The school is represented in local leagues with competitions against other schools in Blackburn & Darwen and the wider Lancashire area. More diverse sporting clubs include dance, dodgeball, bench ball, and outdoor pursuits including archery, bouldering, orienteering and canoeing.
Non-sporting activities are equally as important at OLSJ. Pupils can take part in a wide variety of clubs and societies including cooking, drama, debating, bike maintenance, woodwork, engineering, robotics, model making, board games, languages, media, gardening and photography.
In Year 10 pupils are encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme which sees pupils volunteer at local primary schools, help with school community projects, take up new sports and skills, and participate in a camping expedition. This is an excellent programme to help pupils develop and forge friendships that can last a lifetime.
