Curriculum intent

Health & Social Care – OCR Cambridge Nationals Level 1/Level 2
The OCR Cambridge National in Health and Social Care is a vocational qualification equivalent to a GCSE. It is designed for students aged 14–16 and provides an introduction to the Health and Social care including the early years sectors. The course helps students develop practical skills, knowledge and understanding that are useful for future employment.
Throughout the course students will learn about the needs of individuals at different life stages, how care services support people, and the skills/values required when working with others. They will also explore real-life situations and develop problem-solving and communication skills.

Assessment details

Course Overview:
The qualification is made up of three units-
R032:
– Principles of Care in Health and Social Care Settings (Exam Unit)

R033:
– Supporting Individuals Through Life Events (Coursework Unit)

R035:
– Health Promotion Campaigns (Coursework Unit)

These units combine practical assignments with an external written examination.
Unit R032: 
– Principles of Care in Health and Social Care Settings
This is an externally assessed written examination. In this unit you will learn about:
• The rights of individuals
• Person-centred values
• Effective communication in care settings
• Protecting individuals and safeguarding
• How care services meet people’s needs
This unit provides the foundation knowledge needed for the rest of the course.
Unit R033:
– Supporting Individuals Through Life Events
This unit is assessed through coursework. You will study how different life events such as.
• Starting school
• Illness
• Accidents
• Relationships
• Ageing can affect people physically, emotionally and socially.

You will learn about:

• Growth and development across life stages
• Factors that affect development
• Sources of support available to individuals
• How care workers help people adapt to change
You will complete assignments based on realistic case studies.
Unit R035:
– Health Promotion Campaigns
This unit is also assessed through coursework. You will plan and carry out a health promotion campaign on a chosen topic such as healthy eating, mental health, or the dangers of smoking.

You will learn how to:

• Identify health needs in a community
• Plan and design a campaign
• Communicate health messages effectively
• Review the success of a campaign

Assessment Summary 
• One external written examination (R032)
• Two coursework units (R033 and R035)
