Literacy at Our Lady & St John R.C. High School

The intent of our literacy curriculum is to ensure every pupil can read, write, speak and
listen with confidence so they can fully access the curriculum and succeed in every
subject. Strong literacy underpins academic progress, wellbeing and future life chances,
so every teacher is a teacher of literacy.
Across the whole school, pupils develop:
• Secure reading skills to access and understand increasingly complex texts
• The vocabulary needed to think and communicate within each subject
• The ability to write clearly, accurately and with purpose
• The confidence to express ideas through structured talk
• Strategies for analysing, understanding and responding to challenging material
Our approach builds disciplinary literacy across all subjects, ensuring every pupil has
the language, knowledge and skills required to thrive, regardless of starting point
